Local Ham & Swiss

Have you tried the Local Ham and Swiss sandwich from the Deli yet? We use tasty local ham from Beeler’s farm, bread from a local bakery, Swiss cheese and onions, and toast it hot when you order it. - Sean, Deli counter

We have Valencia oranges just about all year round, but now is when the Navel oranges really get going. As the name indicates, they have a “belly button” on one pole of the fruit. They are seedless and the peel is thick and easy to remove compared to other varieties, making navels the favored eating orange! They are not usually juiced, however.

Here’s an interesting fact. That belly button on the end of the fruit? That’s technically another orange, a twin to the bigger fruit. It’s that mutation, which occurred sometime in the early 1800s, that made the fruit seedless. Since there are no seeds, all navel oranges have to be grafted onto other citrus trees – the navel orange you pick up in the Seward produce department today is genetically identical to the first one that ever existed over 200 years ago. Enjoy that sweet piece of living botanical memory.
