We operate with intentional respect for the environment.
1. Green building, grounds, and operations- energy efficient, renewable, recyclable building materials, alternative energy, use of non-toxic cleaners and supplies.
Measures: Initiatives for green design and innovation
• We exclusively use in-house manufactured Anolyte and Catholyte, non-toxic sanitizer and
cleaner respectively.
• MODs began giving a waste orientation to all new employees
• Waste audits by operations staff that monitor waste containers/an additional element of staff
training
• Deli has plates & silverware for dine-in use
• In partnership with Eureka Recycling, we began composting all organic materials at the co-op, including food scraps and nonrecyclable paper.
• Reuse procedure implemented for Styrofoam peanuts and bubble wrap.
• Developed system for returning 5 gallon buckets to vendors
• Re-implemented use of rechargable batteries
• Wood from the Hood tables (ising reclaimed wood from the neighborhood) in classroom and
conference room
• Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)-certified building
• HourCar, allowing members and staff to rent fuel-efficient Honda hybrid, parked at the co-op
• Expanded use of ZAP (environmentally friendly) water in store cleaning
• Rain gardens all around new building
• Fixtures and equipment from old store were sold or given away to other co-ops
• Increased number of local vendors, reducing transportation costs. More direct vendors than
previous years.
• 599,938 customers resulted in an average of 1.27 kWh/customer for the 09 reporting period.

2. Responsible waste management.
Recycled 3481 yards³ of cardboard and paper products
500 yards³ compost (includes the food recycling program that we used in the old store.)
600 yards³ of trash
260 yard³ of commingle items (plastic, can, glass)
312 yards³ of plastic bag recycling
5153 yards³ total waste

Donated office items such as used furniture and equipment.
Additionally, we are able to forward packing peanuts and bubble wrap to other local businesses for reuse.
3. We encourage alternative transportation for staff and customers.
Ratio of bike racks to employees increased more than 11% with the new building.
77 staff members responded to a transportation survey. 21% biked to work more than half the time compared to 12% who drove more than half the time.
