“Community Acupuncture: The Calmest Revolution Ever Staged”

This film tells the story of how a small group of activist and a massive group of ordinary people with average incomes revolutionized healthcare services by using large empty rooms, old recliner chairs, and two-cent needles. Ten years after two acupuncturists opened the first CA clinic in Oregon; this social movement has since spread to over 200 clinics and created a multi-stakeholder cooperative, “The Peoples Organization of Community Acupuncture” The film follows six patients and shows the impact of affordable acupuncture on their lives and communities. Jessica Hanson of Southpoint Community Acupuncture will lead the discussion following the film showing.

Anyone interested in small-scale farming and the movement’s influence on the way we eat, cook and dine out, needs to see “Dirty Work,” a fascinating and lovingly produced documentary by director Deb Wallwork from Minneapolis-based Redeye Video.
The aptly named film follows a year in the life of farmers Don Roberts and Joni Cash at their western Wisconsin CSA operation, and the attendant spiritual joys and financial pitfalls of running an organic vegetable farm. Roberts’ son Alex, chef/owner of Restaurant Alma in Minneapolis, makes a cameo appearance.
The movie will be followed by discussion with the director, Deb Wallwork.

Bladder and Pelvic Floor Health

You can take control of your bladder and improve overall health, but Kegels are not enough. Come learn common myths in dealing with bladder issues, learn about irritants found in our diets, and find out about bladder re-training. Review options that are available to you. The first part of the class will be lecture and discussion. The second part of the class will be an exercise program you can do at home. This is not your mama's Kegel class. Please bring a yoga mat or a small blanket and a bath-sized towel. You’ll get a therapy band to take home.

Introduction to Hunting Deer and Other Species for Food

Growing movements of Americans that have no experience hunting are taking up hunting as a means of acquiring a local, free-range, and sustainable source of protein, as well as a means of spending time in the outdoors, often with family and friends. The class will include a primer on hunting regulations, finding land to hunt, clothes and gear needed, and how to scout land and waterways, and tips/resources on preparing game for the table. Additionally, the class will provide info on safe and socially responsible firearms ownership, as well as tips on appropriate weapons for participants.

It’s Not What You Eat, But What You Digest

Ever wonder what is the greenest way to go? Hear an award-winning public radio documentary that examines the environmental impacts of conventional death care practices, while highlighting a movement toward greener options. In 30 minutes, “Death’s Footprint” takes you to a crematorium, an undertaker’s parlor, and a sprawling Catholic cemetery in Chicago, as well as into a lively debate between a woman who plans to be composted by worms and her mother, who doesn’t. Other green alternatives are also explored. The listening session will be followed by a question and answer period.

Time for a little spring cleaning? Why should your house have all the fun? Spring is the perfect time to detoxify our bodies naturally with greens! Making green smoothies is a great way to add a wonderful variety of great tasting vegetables and fruits, while gaining all their detoxifying, healing and boosting effects. Making smoothies is also a fun way to incorporate many other natural products offered throughout Seward Co-op. We will cover the benefits of smoothies and explore various techniques for gaining optimum nutrition. Samples and recipes will be provided.

Sausage Making Basics

Learn the basics of sausage making from start to finish, including the proper materials and equipment to use; work area preparation; and casing, stuffing, and linking styles. Materials and equipment will be provided. This is a hands-on class, so bring an apron and be prepared to get a little messy. No experience necessary. You’ll leave with  your own hand-made sausage.

 

Chinese Food Therapy

Participants of the class will learn basic theory of using food as medicine based on the ideas and principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In addition, they will learn ways to apply TCM ideas about food therapy in their everyday life. A few basic recipes will be provided for participants to incorporate in their personal dietary programs.

All About Soy – Vegan Cooking Class
