2010 Farmer Bios

Below you'll find a brief description and links to the farms that attended our 2010 CSA Fair... LTD Lettuce

Auntie Annie's Fields offers whole, frozen chickens that eat organic feed and spend their days munching on greens in a pasture in Dundas, Minn.

Basswood Valley Farm is a 137 acre sustainable dairy and beef farm that started growing vegetables for the Farmers Market five years ago. They are now going into their second year of offering CSA shares. Different options include vegetable shares, steak & eggs shares, birds & burgers shares, and Thanksgiving dinner shares.

Batalden Farms raise organic beef, pork and chicken. All of their animals have access to fresh air, sunlight, and plenty of room to run around. They use ONLY Certified Organic feed and pasture to feed our livestock.

Big River Farm is a program of the Minnesota Food Association based in Marine on St. Croix. They work to train immigrants and other aspiring farmers in Certified Organic production and assist them in developing their own local markets.

Blackberry Community Farm near Wheeler, Wis. is a 30 acre family farm surrounded by woods. It consists of a mixed orchard; flower, herb & vegetable gardens; honey bee yard; and berry patches.

Bluebird Gardens mission is to enrich the health and enjoyment of our customers through nutritionally dense vegetables, meat and eggs.

Callister Farms is a fifth generation family farms raising cornish cross and european broilers, turkeys, and laying hens.

Celestial Harvest is a small CSA family operation out of Center City, MN with a commitment to growing exceptionally tasty and nutritious produce.

DragSmith Farms grows approximately 30 acres of certified organic produce that they market, along with Bison, Elk, Lamb, Honey, Maple Syrup and many other products from neighboring farms in Barron, Wis. 

Driftless Organics What began as a quarter acre field of potatoes on their parents’ organic dairy farm a quarter century ago, Josh & Noah Engel have expanded to over one hundred acres of vegetables, fruits, small grains and sunflowers.

Earth Dance Farm is an 80 acre parcel in the rolling hills of S. E. Minnesota's Bluff Country. They growmore than 40 different chemical free vegetables and herbs as well as the berries, apples and plums and encourage members to visit the farm: work in the fields, walk the woods, or relax by the stream.

The Emergency Foodshelf Network (EFN) has launched a brand new program:  Harvest for the Hungry, an exciting new opportunity to bring fresh, locally grown produce to households facing hunger in our community, while supporting small local farms.

Featherstone Fruits & Vegetables has been certified organic since 1997 and is located in the scenic bluffs of southeast Minnesota. They've operated a successful CSA program for more than ten years.

Fresh Earth Farms
is located just 20 minutes from downtown St. Paul. Being so close, your produce will spend more time on your stove tna in a truck! Fresh Earth Farms offers a wide variety of food and farm related products.

Goats and Gardens is located in west central Wisconsin, where the gardens feed the goats and the goats feed the gardens. All of our gardens are naturally grown and cared for.

Grass Run Farm is run by Ryan and Kristine Jepsen in Dorchester, Iowa. They are passionate about raising the highest quality grass-fed Angus beef. They also collaborate with other farmers who value holistic and sustainable land and animal management.

Growing Lots Urban Farm Located in the Seward neighborhood of Minneapolis, this urban CSA will offer shares of produce grown inside high tunnels, which will extend the growing season considerably, and on an abandoned parking lot converted for vegetable production.

Harmony Valley out of Viroqua, Wis. supplies over 1500 families with certified organic, high quality, seasonal produce from May through January.

Kicking Mule Farm is a small CSA in Southwestern Minnesota specializing in pesticide-free organically grown and raised fruits, vegetables, and animals.

La Finca  (Spanish for "The farm") This forty acre farm is a mix of fields, forest, and wetlands where they grow 5 acres of certified organic vegetables and raise chickens on pasture in portable hoophouses 100 miles north of the Twin Cities. 

Little Footprint Farm is on 50+ gorgeous acres of wooded & grazing pastures in Turtle Lake, Wisconsin. Sustainablity & energy efficiency are high priority and CSA members can fish, hike, and camp at the farm.

Little Flower Farm is a 60 member CSA in Marine on St. Croix, MN offering seasonal vegetables and first dibs on pastured lamb, pork, and poultry as well as a discount on free-range eggs.

L.T.D. Farm is run by former Seward Co-op employee Khaiti Kahleck in Osceola, Wis. She offers a monthly share of duck eggs and goatmilk soap. Khaiti also raises turkeys and meat and dairy goats.

Mhonpaj's Garden is the first certified organic Hmong owned CSA and works to educate the community on local foods, Hmong herbs & vegetables, and promote healthy lifestyle through education using the Hmong model that healthy foods is a healthy spirit.

Minnesota Valley Organics
provides flax, pork and pork products.

Ploughshare Farm
is a certified organic farm located 18 miles north of Alexandria. They grow a wide variety of organic vegetables and some fruits on 160 acres of fertile soil bordering the Chippewa River in Central Minnesota. 

Rock Spring Farm is a family-owned farm located just north of Highlandville, Iowa, where farmers Chris and Kim Blanchard strive to produce healthy, delicious food that people can build a meal - and a relationship - around.

Rusty Hoe Farm is a very small start up CSA and the first solo sustainable vegetable farming project for Alissa Moore.

Seward Co-op Meat Bundle A relatively new program from our Meat & Seafood dept. featuring a variety of packaged meat options that offer significant savings on 100% local meats, for example the Beef Value Pack, Sausage Sample Pack and Family Variety Pack.

Sunshine Harvest Farm raises 100% grass-fed beef & lamb and pasture raised chickens & eggs. The do not use hormones, antibiotic, or chemicals on any of their animals. They offer meat and eggs through their CSA.

Sylvan Hills Organic Farm Certified in 2003, Larry & Jackie grow their produce in clay soil, pick everything vine-ripened to ensure the maximum flavour and nutrition, and pay a living wage to the people they hire.

Tiny Planet Produce is Certified Naturally Grown and located near the St. Croix River and provides fresh, easily accessible produce to its members.

Treasured Haven Farm is home to the Johnsons who believe in farming in an environmentally responsible manner. The farm is close enough to visit and they offer lots of reasons for members to make the short trip.

Turnip Rock CSA aims to give consumers a value comparable to conventional grocery stores and a quality beyond anything you might find on their shelves. Turnip Rock is located in New Auburn, Wis.

Webster Farm Organic is deeply committed to the restoration of the ecosystem and to the production of healthy food. CSA is an experience that allows them to meet the people who eat the food they are so proud to grow, and for you to know the land from which it comes.

Women's Enviromental Institute WEI is a non-profit organization designed to create and share knowledge about environmental issues and to promote agricultural justice.

Whole Food Co-op represents 30 member families in Central Minnesota. We are committed to creating farms that nourish our families spiritually and economically, sustain the environment, and provide eaters with safe wholesome food and a clear sense of who and where their food comes from.
